The Johnston film — the finished yard, with the owners on what it took to get there.

Pool and raised spa with spillway at the Johnston residence in Woodland Hills
Project overview

Four ways to use a yard that used to be one.

The Johnston rear yard runs narrow and long, with an ivy-covered slope pressing in at the back. Instead of spending the whole footprint on a pool, we split it: a pool with a raised spa spilling into it sits against the house, and the ground the slope was eating gets held back by a block retaining wall to make room for everything else.

That recovered ground carries a redwood pergola on a raised paver terrace, reached by broad steps off the pool deck, and a putting green in artificial turf beside it. Large-format pavers tie the whole yard together, boulders and planting soften the wall line, and string lighting runs the length of it — so the yard reads as one space with four things to do in it.

  • Pool with a raised spa and spillway into the main body.
  • Large-format paver deck wrapping the pool and patio.
  • Block retaining wall holding the rear slope back.
  • Redwood pergola on a raised paver terrace with wide steps.
  • Artificial-turf putting green with cup flags.
  • Boulder and planting detail, plus overhead string lighting.
